Holidays Around the World in 1st Grade
Reported by email@example.com on 1/19/18
For the month of December our first graders packed their bags and stamped their passports for their journey to learn about Holidays Around the World! They visited 14 countries, covering 6 continents, to learn about various holiday customs and traditions celebrated around the world. After each visit, they made a traditional artifact used to help celebrate the holiday, and we decorated our bulletin boards with them. We learned how to appreciate the differences in others and why it is important to understand our differences. We also learned how to respectfully ask questions and give compliments of these differences among our cultures, customs, and traditions. Various texts during our Shared Reading time helped us understand these important ideas such as Mrs. Muddle’s Holidays, The Sandwich Swap, Suki’s Kimono, and Jalapeño Bagels.
The students also prepared a holiday report to share with the class about their own traditions and customs that are special to their family. We learned about a wide variety of holidays from Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July, to Ramadan, Diwali, Slava, Chinese New Year, and Onam. The students presented their posters and artifacts well for their very first report! We are so proud of their hard work. Our very own teaching assistant, Mrs. Bossert, even gave us a special insight to Christmas in her home country of Germany! We enjoyed how everyone was able to contribute to this unit and we look forward to studying holidays upcoming throughout the year.
