Kindergarten (Kin Connect)

Kin Connect is a monthly activity (October thru April) for kindergartners sponsored by the LMC and presented by PTA Reading volunteers. This activity is usually coordinated with the classroom curriculum and is held in the classroom. Students enjoy special books read aloud to them, play rhymes, cut and tell stories where they have to follow cutting instructions while a story is being read to them, and / or special crafts that coordinate with a particular area of study. This program is intended to familiarize the kindergartners with the materials available in the LMC and to promote the enjoyment of reading.

Kin Connect – October

Stella Louella’s Runaway Book is an Everyone Fiction Book/Picture Book and is the focus of this first Kin Connect session. Students learn all about the information found on the outside of the book. On the front cover you will find the author’s name and the illustrator’s name as well as the title of the book. On the spine of the book at the bottom will be found the white spine label that contains the “book’s address.” After sharing the story students review how many books they are able to check out from the LMC, and then they create their very own bookworm headband.

Kin Connect – November

The theme for this session is Thanksgiving. Students hear a crazy alphabet story and complete a quick activity afterwards. A cut and tell story is also shared; it’s called “The Pilgrims Find a Goblin.” Throughout the story the children have a piece of paper that they will be cutting which will produce a special story-related shape.

Kin Connect – December

Gingerbread is the theme for this month. The students hear the Hawaiian version of the gingerbread man. It’s called The Musubi Man. Other activities following the reading of the story include a fingerplay, a glyph (following directions activity), and a take-home activity packet.

Kin Connect – January

Students hear the story, Snip, Snip. . . Snow! by Nancy Poydar read aloud. This is the story of a little girl who was disappointed that there was no snow to play in outside. Her teacher planned a special activity for the students where they created snowflakes made out of paper.

"The Disappearing Snowman" is a cut and tell story about how a snowman decreases in size over a week's time. Students are asked to follow specific cutting instructions as the short story progressed
Creating Disappearing SnowmanFollowing cutting directions to create a smaller and smaller snowman.

Kin Connect – February

A special story using nesting dolls is this month’s focus. The book is entitled Matreshka by Becky Hicox Ayres, and the nesting dolls used in the story are actually Matreshka dolls (or nesting dolls). Students color their own paper Matreshka dolls prior to this activity and cut them out during Kin Connect. They use their own paper dolls to follow through the story. There is a take-home activity as well.

Kin Connect - March

The theme for this month's Kin Connect is St. Patrick's Day. Students learn a little about St. Patrick, hear the Irish folktale, Tim O'Toole and the Wee Folk read aloud and then follow specific cutting instructions during a cut and tell story called "Barney's Mission."

Kin Connect - April

Students learn about "Keep America Beautiful" month, Earth Day and Arbor Day during this month's program. Jack's Garden by Henry Cole is read aloud to the children. They learn all about the different gardening tools used in the book and by their parents. To celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day, the students participate in a cut and tell story called "The Tooth-Picking Giants." They listen carefully to the cutting instructions throughout the story so they would create the correct shapes to accompany the story. Kindergartners also take home a special Arbor Day "Paper Everygreen Tree" activity to enjoy.
